Chapter Five - The Gnostic Chapel

It is clear, even without delving deeply into the hidden meanings of the Chapel, that Roslyn was created as a Gnostic temple, hiding in plain sight the secrets that the Templars, the Masons and other true seekers discovered.

Who were the Gnostics?

During the Middle-ages the church waged war on what it deemed as pagan beliefs. Herbal medicine people, midwives and those who followed the sacred circle of the seasons were demonised and destroyed. It is estimated that more than four million “witches” were burned at the stake during those times. Those who followed nature were called “devil” worshippers and nature herself was painted as a dark and frightening world filled with wild ferocious animals. The fear was so great that all ailments, illnesses and accidents were seen as punishment from an angry God. War became holy when sanctified by the church and murder became salvation when instigated by the Pope.

This topsy-turvy logic brainwashed people into willingly bonding themselves to the cruel and vicious laws of the church for centuries. Anyone or any group who had the temerity to think differently were outlawed and destroyed.

The Cathars a group of Gnostics who lived in southern France and Italy lived peaceful lives in harmony with nature. Their belief system was based on Gnostic wisdom. Gnostics means they are “those who know God” through personal experience and therefore do not need priests or spiritual leaders. In 1208, Pope Innocent III sought to extinguish the movement in the early decades of the thirteenth century but was not entirely successful. He launched the Medieval Inquisition to finish the task. He promised that anyone who destroyed the Cathars would automatically be given entrance into heaven. Whilst we might find such a promise ridiculous, people at that time genuinely believed that the Pope had such powers and an excommunication literally meant that person would be assigned to hell’s torment. This was the all encompassing power of the church.

All the Cathars were put to death and their belief system, which so threatened the powers of the Catholic Church was destroyed.

Over time the church began to lose its power, first with the help of science and secondly with church reformation and the formation of protestant faiths. However the fear-based brain-washing of the church did not disappear but instead melded into the thought patterns of our society. As new institutions arose they embraced and then employed the same fearful mindset that served the church so well.

Gnostic Overview:

There is still quite a dispute over exactly what the Gnostics believed in. One organization, The Gnostic Foundation offers a lot of information. They state that a true spiritual path begins with the acquisition of knowledge.

The following is a quote from their website:

“ Our first goal is to share that knowledge with you. Secondly, we teach a system of practice that you can use to make your knowledge real in your life, thus realizing the true nature of the information you have gained. Knowledge realized is understanding. As
